Solid hardwood is not just another piece of covering you put on floors; for some, it is a tradition that has been around for generations. Seen as the archetypal flooring material, solid hardwood flooring gives any home a unique character, whilst giving you many other benefits. Solid wood floors are able to preserve the natural stains, surface and other character marks of each wood variety.

Whereas solid hardwood floors are typically 18mm thick planks cut directly from a tree, engineered hardwood floors are composed of three to five layers of wood glued together using cross-grain lamination. Additional layers mean additional stability so more is better. There are two main reasons that you might choose engineered hardwood flooring. Firstly cost; where the wood is expensive, like Walnut, only the top layer will

When you decide to have a hardwood, engineered or laminate flooring installed in your home you will also need underlay to make the most of your new floor. There are many types to choose from, and when we come to your home to provide you with a quote and show you samples we will be able to advise you on the best underlay depending on what flooring we are installing, and what the surface is like.
DPM Underlay
When installing a floor over concrete subfloor we recommended that you use a flooring underlay with in-built Damp Proof Membrane (DPM). This will prevent any moisture damage to your floor as damp can make your new wood floor expand and potentially buckle, it is very easy to prevent with the right floor underlay. Expansion isn’t as common with engineered flooring but can be expected with hardwood flooring.
Many of our Glasgow customers live in apartments and so flooring underlay with sound reduction qualities is a popular and sensible choice. This can prevent quite a large amount of noise from travelling to the rooms below, and is also suitable for bedrooms. It has also been popular with our business customers as it’s popular in office blocks where a lot of noise from another floor can be very distracting.
Thermal Insulation Underlay
Thermal insulation in your underlay can save you money by helping a room to retain heat. As prices of gas and electricity rise, our Glasgow customers need all the help they can get to reduce bills! Generally all flooring underlay offers some level of thermal insulation purely because it is an extra layer to your flooring; however products specifically designed for thermal insulation will do a better job at retaining heat in your home.
One main reason for a problem arising with hardwood and laminate floors is subfloor issues. If the subfloor is uneven then this can cause many problems, but there are things you can do to prevent and correct this. We use an underlay which is designed to eliminate uneven subfloors and solve any problems without extra work.
Underfloor Heating
If your engineered wood or laminate flooring has underfloor heating then you need to choose the right underlay that has been specifically designed to be used with it. If the products you choose are not designed for use with heating then it can cause the system to overheat as it isn’t covered with products which aren’t designed to help the air to circulate.
Over the last few years, with people being more environmentally conscious, bamboo flooring has really taken off. Not only is it environmentally friendly but it also looks stunning in any room and is durable enough for areas of heavy use.
Bamboo flooring offers are more unconventional alternative and many people prefer this to hardwood and solid flooring options.
So what are the benefits of bamboo flooring?
Super tough and durable
Bamboo is a very strong wood. When growing wild, it’s very tough and can pretty much grow in any soil. When it is processed as a flooring product it undergoes further strengthening, and ends up even stronger than oak.
Technically, bamboo is a grass and grows extremely quickly compared to any other
type of wood. It is also very quick growing, taking only 3 years to reach full maturity
while with most other trees, take three
times as long. It can therefore be replaced much more easily, making their use better
for the environment. However, there are a couple of things to consider when choosing bamboo:
Quality can vary
You need to make sure that you choose a trusted flooring supplier who can source good quality bamboo on your behalf. At present there are no official certification standards for bamboo flooring even though it is approved by the (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) LEED. That means that quality or hardness of the bamboo flooring can actually vary, depending on the company you’re using. We source only the best bamboo so make
Bamboo can scratch easier than hardwood flooring
Bamboo floors can be easy to scratch or dent if they’re damaged by heavy furniture that’s moved or jolted. This may not be the best option if you have children or lots of pets. However, there are steps you can take to prevent damage such as lifting rather than dragging furniture, removing high heels and sports shoes, making sure your pets don’t have sharp nails and using furniture castors.
The pros outweigh the cons when it comes to bamboo flooring, so give us a call and we will happily bring samples to your home for you to choose from.
Beech is native to Britain, and the bark of the tree is smooth and a very distinctive light grey in colour. In beech woods there is often very little else growing because the leaves prevent sunlight from reaching it. The leaves that fall from the beech take a very long time to disintegrate so they form a blanket on the floor, again preventing anything on the ground from growing.
Beech wood is very strong and durable and has a lovely even texture. Beech is a pale and attractive hardwood with a lightly marked surface which gives a floor character without being dark enough to detract from the design of the rest of the room.
Beech Hardwood Flooring
Beech is a very attractive hardwood flooring option; it’s pale but available in many shades, tone and styles. You can choose flooring with either few markings or more markings to make it look more distinctive.
Beech Engineered Flooring
Beech engineered flooring is constructed by three or four layers of wood being fused together, with the beech hardwood layer on top to give the finished product the same appearance as solid beech flooring.
Beech Laminate Flooring
Beech laminate flooring is very popular because there is such a large range to choose from. It’s durable, easy to maintain and very affordable. It’s ideal for areas of heavy use and is quick and easy to install. You can choose from many shades and effects from many different brands.
Oak is an incredibly popular wood floor option, and is by far our most popular
product. Other flooring options become fashionable but oak is the one that is consistently fitted throughout homes in Glasgow. As a tree, it’s tall, strong and impressive and even though certain conditions can affect the growth rate, it can reach impressive heights of around 60 to
100 feet.
There are hundreds of species including deciduous and evergreen varieties, and oak trees produce acorns which take between
six and 18 months to mature but the trees themselves take hundreds of years.
Oak is a highly attractive and sought after building material and is great for furniture
as well as flooring. Because of its strength
oak was even used to construct ships up
until the 19th century, which is another
reason why it is a perfect material for your
flooring.
Installing an oak hardwood in your home provides any room with beauty, strength, style and durability. There are many products to choose from, all offering a great range of styles, shades, finishes and plank width. Colours vary, from very dark to very pale, and with varying knots, markings and plank width. Choose from many finishes and edges to give your home a traditional yet stunning appearance.
Oak engineered flooring
Oak engineered flooring is also very popular with our Glasgow customers and it comprises several wood layers stuck to one another using high pressures. This method of construction helps in creating wooden flooring, which boasts higher strength and durability compared to a wooden floor of solid material, whilst retaining the same aesthetics as the solid variety.
Engineered flooring is also less likely to
expand and contract, unlike hardwood
flooring. This happens because of room
Oak laminate flooring

The options really are endless, but whatever you choose you will end up with a very attractive flooring to complement your home.
Walnut is becoming an ever increasingly popular flooring choice for many of our Glasgow customers. Walnut trees are deciduous and grow to between 10 and 40 meters tall, maturing in about 20 years. Walnut trees are strong trees and very resistant to cold, although they can become damaged by excessive frost.
The timber itself is very hard and dense, which is one of the reasons that it makes such good flooring. Walnut floors also polish up to a very smooth finish and the colour ranges from creamy white to a deeper, dark shade.
Walnut is grainy and well-marked which has a lot of rings, knots and lines making a very
